The Setting

It was the kind of night that even stray dogs bum cigarettes: hot and breezy with the sultry, oppressive air as heavy and welcome as an old army blanket, the evening winds off the sea tantalizingly deceptive, (yet another of the city’s lies), providing no relief or comfort to the denizens of the streets.

 

She stood there, aloof, uninterested in the curious, hungry stares of the occasional passerby, oozing distain, her stance deceptively loose under the buzzing, flickering street light; a cool, strawberry Popsicle of indifference, her pouting lips seeming to challenge anyone to have a taste, with her 2 best friends, Smith and Wesson daring you to try.

 

Film Noir Background

Film Noir emerged after the era of the Great Depression, into a world that desperately wanted to be filled with optimism, and to believe that good had triumphed over evil after the Great War in Europe. But under the surface, writhing like a slumbering snake with bad dreams, there was an underworld growing pessimistic about the bright and shiny hopeful “happy days are here again” theme.

It was a society contradictory in its feeling of ever encroaching darkness, and saw right and wrong as just different shades of gray; a world where nothing was simple anymore and never would be again. A world of lost innocence, hopeless moral ambiguity, seductive murderesses, well-worn and sardonic heroes and smoky, two fisted bad guys you could relate to, amid a culture of fast times and shiny neon-flashy decay, bullets, booze, and sex.

 

It was a society whose reflection can again be seen in any dirt-stained, smoky, broken mirror, coming up like a gassy reminder of this morning’s greasy pizza and warm beer.

It’s into this world that we wish to descend with you, with our Noir style photography; a dark territory of contrast and black and white, of shadow and light coexisting in an uneasy alliance. Of oversaturated colors, too good to be true.

Of shaded eyes and hesitant emotion, peeking and peering around damp and dripping lampposts of the soul, hoping for love, wanting it to last forever, tainted by broken promises and unmentioned past lives; survivors of the world’s impersonal tenderless mercies.

 

Ladies, are you that “Strawberry Popsicle”, the dame who awaits her Humphrey Boggart? 

 

And fellas, are you man enough to make your move?
